Mingus
Mingus is the mean bass player in the school band. Nobody messes with him!
Charles Mingus was a skilled jazz bassist. He worked with Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie.
He was also an inventive jazz composer and bandleader.
During the 1940s, he helped develop bop, a new and experimental jazz style.
Mingus won respect as a campaigner for Civil Rights in the USA. He opposed racism, and organised a strike at a jazz festival when black musicians were not given the respect they deserved.
