Courtney's Studio

Courtney uses music technology to record, change and put together his music in new and exciting ways.

In fact, he arranged, engineered and mixed most of the music for Jazz Daze in his home studio.

Courtney likes the way technology lets him control the way his music sounds.

'it plays back what you play, so you can work bar by bar, beat by beat, change whatever you want'

Let's look at some ways music technology can help musicians like Courtney to reshape their musical ideas.

Teacher Notes

Courtney uses ICT to extend musical possibilities, not to replace traditional musical skills.

Computers played an important part when Courtney recorded his Back in the Day album. Because he was aiming to create the feeling of a 'remix' album, he was very involved in recording and mixing the tracks to ensure he got the sound he wanted.

Courtney believes that the skills required to make music with the help of technology have a lot in common with those displayed by expert DJs, selecting and editing grooves he might use in live performances and working with the beat.

As an instrumentalist you can play a good solo on just about any beat but as a DJ, producer and programmer, the beats have to be right and these beats are what have worked for me live.

Online pages introduce pupils to the contribution of ICT to Jazz Daze , exploring the processes involved. Wherever possible, this is clarified by audio examples online or through reference to the CDR soundtrack...
